Is It Too Early to Mow? Spring Lawn Care Do’s and Don’ts

The first warm stretch of spring hits Ohio and suddenly everyone is ready to get outside. The mower comes out of the garage, landscaping plans start taking shape, and after months of looking at a brown lawn, it feels good to finally do something.

But before you fire up the mower, take a look at your lawn. Just because it’s warm enough to mow doesn’t always mean your grass is ready.

Don’t Mow Just Because the Calendar Says Spring

There isn’t a magic date for the first mow of the year. Ohio weather can give us 70 degrees one week and frost the next.

Instead, pay attention to your grass and the ground underneath it. Your lawn should be actively growing and tall enough that mowing is actually necessary. If the ground is still soggy from spring rain or snowmelt, give it more time.

Running heavy equipment across a wet lawn can compact the soil, create ruts, and damage grass that is just starting to come out of dormancy.

If your lawn still looks a little rough after winter, that doesn’t necessarily mean something is wrong. Learn why your lawn may look dead after winter and what you can do about it.

Do Clean Up First

Before the first mow, walk the property. Pick up sticks, remove leftover leaves, and look for branches or debris that may have collected over the winter.

This is also a good opportunity to look for:

  • Bare or thinning areas
  • Matted grass
  • Standing water
  • Winter damage
  • Fallen or damaged tree limbs

Catching these problems early gives you time to address them before the growing season really takes off.

Don’t Cut Too Much at Once

That first mow can be satisfying, but resist the urge to cut the lawn extra short to make it look clean.

Removing too much of the grass blade at once can stress the plant and make it harder for your lawn to establish strong growth. A good rule is to avoid removing more than one-third of the grass blade during a single mowing.

Regular mowing at the proper height will give you better results than trying to get everything perfectly short on the first pass.

Do Think Beyond the First Cut

Spring lawn care is not just about mowing. Once your grass starts growing, your entire landscape starts waking up too.

This is the time to think about edging, mulch, shrub trimming, cleanup, landscaping projects, and any problem areas you noticed last year.

If you’re considering a bigger improvement, planning early matters. Quality landscaping companies start filling their schedules well before summer arrives. Read more about why winter and early spring are the best times to plan landscaping projects.
